It is with immense sadness that Social Quizstancing have to announce that, following a brave battle against illness, our valued team mate and friend Annabel Lloyd passed away on Saturday morning.
Annabel was a devoted mother and wife, and a gifted language teacher. She had many hobbies including art and culture, tennis, cycling, spending time in Italy and of course quizzing.
She played for Social Quizstancing in the OQL (UK), Connections and the Magnusson-Trebek Trophy. She also represented Greengage in the Quiz League of London and appeared on Mastermind and Brain of Britain.
One of Annabel's great strengths was her commitment to being the best team mate she could possibly be. She would go through all the questions on her previous quizzes, making notes on flash cards of topics to revise. She was also not afraid to challenge herself, most notably despite not having any scientific background, regularly competing in the International Culture Challenge. These techniques of continuous improvement helped Annabel to give her most impressive answer in OQL, when she unexpectedly identified the correct atomic particle!
Annabel would not have been the quiz player she was without the valuable support of her family. As Annabel was a technophobe, she would always rely on the technical support provided by her husband Perry to enable her to quiz or read. Than you Perry for all the assistance you provided.
Thanks to daughter Imogen for stepping in to play in Annabel's place for what turned out to be her last scheduled appearance. Our condolences and thoughts go to all of Annabel's family. Fortunately Annabel was present for the birth of Imogen's twins a few months ago, and last month was present at the wedding of her son. We are glad that Annabel's family, at this difficult time, is able to take consolation in these precious moments.
We can not believe that on Wednesday evenings, we will no longer get to hear Annabel's catchphrases such as "I'll guess simply because I can", "That was hard!" or "Are there any spares?" Nor will we ever get to marvel again at the depths of Annabel's knowledge. We are thankful for the immense contribution to our team and we are sure Annabel will be deeply missed by the quizzing community.
